For any long time follower of this blog, you know how much I hate bike thieves, although it’s possible I assisted one, once, unknowingly, at my own peril.
Also, being a fan of cycling, I often keep an eye out for bikes in movies and other popular culture (we need more cycling references in gangsta rap, although we already know about the drive by cycling shootings in da hood).
So while watching Megamind for the uhm…seventh time..I noticed cycling themes several times through out the movie.
Now, if you haven’t seen the movie, you really should. The poor thing got crushed out because Tangled (Disney’s new princess movie) and Harry Potter 7 came out a week after Dreamworks launched Megamind in the theatres in the U.S. Megamind is one of the funniest, raddest movies I’ve seen in probably over a decade. I mean, hell, I’ve seen it seven times. I don’t even LIKE going go the movies.
I won’t bother going over the premise of the movie, aside to say there is some super villain action.
Megamind goes on a crime spree and steals everything of value in town. As we catch a glimpse of the room he’s bunkered down in, we see the Ark of the Covenant, piles of cash and gold, famous statues and art, and … a really nice road bike. WTF? We find out later he doesn’t even know HOW to ride a bike. So here, amongst all the riches the city has to offer, is a BICYCLE.
Later, a second villain goes on a crime spree, and we see what he has decided to steal. Arcade game machines, an ATM…and a really sweet road bike! The guy has probably never even been on a bike, based on his physical condition.
So here we have not one, but TWO, villains in the same movie stealing bicycles as part of their loot.
I’m not really going anywhere with this, but I found it very funny. I wonder if several Dreamworks employees got their bikes stolen? Since they live in LA or the bay area, then they probably have lost a bike or three to bike thieves. Or super villains.
I love random bike references in movies – on of my favourites is in the Coen brothers’ Burn After Reading, where Brad Pitt is the fitness/bike enthusiast. The bike jokes, I thought, were among the best in the movie.
On a somewhat serious, non-movie related note, however, for anyone wondering how to properly lock their bike up or what kind of lock to use, I found this information really helpful: http://www.montaguebikes.com/folding-bikes-blog/2010/12/preventing-bike-theft/
